Project Brief

The Problem

How can we help students ignore distractions and maintain good study habits during COVID-19?

Our Solution

Develop a gamified productivity app using to-do lists, Pomodoro method, & rewards.

Insights

1

Time management & procrastination are biggest barriers to productivity.

2

Gamification can enhance user engagement.

3

Time intervals with short breaks are proven to increase productivity.

About

One of the biggest issues with being in the comfort of our home is having entertainment readily available at any given time.

We hope to solve productivity issues when working or studying at home with our productivity app, Focus Zone.

Starting Off...
with User Interviews

We began this project by seeking students at Santa Monica College at different locations (Center of Media and Design & Student Center). We asked questions involving what helps them be productive, what problems they have with productivity, etc.

What we Discovered

1

Time management & procrastination were biggest barriers to productivity

2

Common distractions were from social media, gaming & TV

3

Students try to-do lists, planners, timers, alarms, & calendars to stay organized

I know the phone is really bad for me in terms of how productive I am... I need to get better with self control with the phone”

Mood Board

We wanted the app to feel relaxing yet invigorating. Orange is associated energy, happiness, and mental stimulation and purple is relaxing and an introspective color.

Storytime

Ues-case Scenario

Marissa has trouble staying focused on her English essay assignments. She sets a task tomorrow to work on her essay using Focus Zone.

At 9am, the timer on FocusZone goes off and alerts her to start her English essay. She acknowledges the notification with a tap. This logs her in directly and brings her to the task page.

She starts working and the break intervals go off to alert her when the break time is.

When the timer ends, she gets a boost of confidence. She feels like she accomplished something with her day! She can choose to go ahead to the next task or view her progress.

Marissa is rewarded with points to unlock features of the app. This gives her more motivation to keep using the app.

When she goes back to the Today view, she sees that she has completed the task. She can also view her progress for the week.

Takeaways

What Worked

We were able to communicate effectively and we worked incredibly well as a team. At the beginning of the project, we listed our skillset and delegated the tasks according to our strengths. We also listed deadlines for each feature and which tasks are finished so that we were able to keep track of what needs to be done.

To collaborate on the prototype, we used Adobe XD's collaborate feature, which allowed us to work together efficiently and cohesively.

What Didn't Worked

Since it was around the start of quarantine, many people needed time to adjust. It was especially bad timing for one of our groupmates, who had to drop out of the class. Thus, circumstances were more difficult to work with than usual and much of the work was placed on members who weren't affected as much.

In addition, our group ran into a dilemma. I began formulating an alternative method to problems I was seeing before the user test. After further discussion, I deviated from the main group temporarily to pursue this option and have the user tests decide the outcome of which solution is preferred. In the end, users preferred the original solution but without the features I advocated to remove.

What I Would Do Differently

When it came down to disagreements of pivoting the project location, it may have been better to lay out the opportunities, limitations, and scope of each choice. That way, we can better understand each other's thoughts on why one choice is better than another. Additionally, I should conduct user testing before pursuing another solution before solving the problems present in the current one.
